What is an UPS?

The optimal solution universally adopted is to store energy in a battery. Being able to get a continuous supply of alternating current to convert the direct current of the battery goes into an alternating current of the same features as the commercial power supply, but without interruption.

When all the elements of this solution are integrated on single equipment, this is what is called UPS, which stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply. There are several structures UPS, with various technologies of its components.

Offline UPS

The OFFLINE UPS supplies (or routes) the incoming mains supply directly through to the output usually through a relay contact. Some high frequency noise filtering and surge suppression may be included in this path. The UPS switches on its inverter as soon as mains supply failure is detected or below the normal load and simultaneously switches the output relay to the inverter side to supply battery sourced power to the load. This transition involves a delay on account of the time to reliably dOffline UPSetect mains failure and switch over a relay, and the output is broken for this period (usually for 2 to 12msec).

OFF – LINE UPS are usually the least expensive as compared to the other two.

What exactly is Off-Line technology?

Off-Line is the simplest protection. The PC continues to receive power through the electrical network but without energy conversion. In the event of a problem such as power outages or voltage changes, the UPS is supported by batteries in order to stabilize the voltage. The use of this technology is appropriate for the protection of PC’s, work stations, passive terminals and low range servers.

The true LINE INTERACTIVE design is in fact a combination of OFFLINE & ONLINE, in which the inverter plays a dual role of charging the battery when mains supply is present as well as regulating the output voltage and working as a normal inverter in absence of mains supply, so to the user it appears like an ONLINE System. Line Interactive UPS offers enhanced power protection over the basic Offline designs by providing additional line conditioning.

What exactly is Line Interactive technology?

These devices operate in exactly the same way as Off-Line. The difference is that the UPS is totally controlled by means of a micro-processor which studies and analyzes the quality of the electrical network and detects the variations in said network without the need for batteries when it is not absolutely necessary. Through this technology, early wear of the batteries is prevented. The most common use of these UPS’s is the protection of PC servers, Intranet servers and Internet Networking equipment.

Online UPS

An ONLINE UPS is the one in which the inverter always supplies power to the protected load and hence the same quality of power is ensured all the time. When mains supply is present, the inverter derives its power from thee mains supplied rectifier and the backup batteries are also kept in charged state. When the mains fail, the source of DC power for the inverter section shifts to the battery without any break whatsoever in the output to the Inverter. It also bears all the vagaries and noise borne out of the mains supply and insulates the secure bus supply from it.

An ONLINE UPS is especially useful for sensitive and critical equipments/devices.

What exactly is On-Line technology?

This technology is mainly characterized by a constant quality of power supply throughout any disturbance or fluctuation. An On-Line UPS does not constantly supply energy from the batteries, but rather the current is regenerated through the transformation of the alternating current to direct current and vice versa. In this way, it is possible to isolate the load of any fluctuation in the input current. The most standardized use is the protection of Internet/Intranet servers, and the protection of telecommunications and industrial systems.

What can an UPS do for me?

Every UPS will supply power to a load (such as a computer, telephone switch or medical equipment) when mains power fails, it may also condition the power and prevent spikes, brownouts, interference and other unwanted problems from reaching the supported equipment.

Is it advisable to use a UPS with a Laser printer?

The functionality of a UPS consists in providing auxiliary power for the purpose of preserving precious data. With a laser printer, in the event of a mishap in the electrical supply, the printing tasks remain queued in the print spool and are naturally recovered once the mishap is gone.

Nevertheless, for large printing cycles involving publishing houses, graphics and copiers in general, it is best to protect the data in order to cushion the large data transmission time to the printer memory.

How to maintain an UPS?

There are three simple methods:

  1. Never overload your UPS.
  2. Never connect any home electronic devices such as cooling fan to your UPS. This may cause malfunction of your UPS.
  3. Discharge the battery in a consistent interval. The best way to do it is once a month or once two months. The simplest discharge way is to turn on the UPS without connecting the mains
